The Junos OS routing protocol process assigns a default preference value (also known as an administrative distance) to each route that the routing table receives. The default value depends on the source of the route. The preference value is a value from 0 through 4,294,967,295 (2 32 – 1), with a lower value indicating a more preferred route. The administrative distance of a static route can be increased so that it becomes the secondary route for the same network.
By default, static route has an admin distance of 10 and OSPF Int and OSPF Ext have admin distances of 30 and 110 respectively. If a router has routes to same destination from two different protocols it will prefer the protocol with lowest AD value, and its routes will be installed in the Routing / Forwarding table. Lower administrative distances are preferred over higher distances. For example, if the device receives routes for the same network from OSPF and from RIP, the device will prefer the OSPF route by default.
